Austin ranks 9th among 100 US cities for coffee. These other Texas cities may surprise you

Sunday is National Coffee Day — and like the rest of the country, Texas loves its expresso.

American adults drink over 400 million cups of coffee per day, according to the National Coffee Association. The 2024 trends report shows the average coffee-drinking American has .

Here are some other key findings by the National Coffee Association:

  • While 61% of Americans choose traditional coffee, 56% turn to specialty coffees like lattes, espressos and cappuccinos.

  • It's no surprise that 84% of Americans have their coffee in the morning with breakfast. A huge 76% of Americans say coffee wakes them up and gets them going.

    Is all this reading making you thirsty? A new WalletHub analysis has gathered data on the 100 largest U.S. cities and ranked them using 12 key factors of coffee-lover friendliness.

    "Coffee has become a staple of American culture, helping people stay energized for the workday and bond with friends or dates," WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo says. "But the costs of having one or more cups of Joe daily can add up, especially as prices inflate. In the cities that are craziest about coffee, the average household may spend as much as $280 per year on the beverage. At the same time, as much as 30% of the population has machines for making coffee at home."

    How do Texas cities measure up against others when it comes to caffeine? Here's a breakdown.

    Austin ranks #9 among best coffee cities

    The Lone Star State's capital fared pretty well for its coffee, scoring 62.08 points. The best coffee city, with 67.01 points, was Portland, Ore.

    Lubbock has highest average price for cup of cappuccino

    Out of all the cities in WalletHub's analysis, Lubbock's average cup of cappuccino was the most expensive — twice the price of the cheapest average in Durham, NC.

    On a more positive note, El Paso claimed the third-cheapest average cost for a cup of cappuccino.

    San Antonio, Austin and Corpus Christi dominated all other cities in terms of the average cost of a pack of coffee.

    Four California cities — San Francisco, Fremont, San Jose and Oakland — filled the bottom of the list, reporting the highest average prices for a pack of coffee.
