Sep. 27—DANVILLE — The Columbia-Montour Council Boy Scouts of America will recognize this year's distinguished citizen next month.

The Scouts Distinguished Citizen Award is presented annually to "a person whose service to the community has been exemplary," according to a press release.

Harry Mathias, retired Central Columbia superintendent and current chairperson of the Community Giving Foundation Board, will receive this year's award.

Mathias' community service has also included terms on the board of directors of the Columbia-Montour Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber Foundation Board and the United Way of Columbia County Board.

Mathias also operates Mathias Educational Leadership LLC in Bloomsburg, where he works with school district administrators and school boards to optimize their working relationships to provide an opportunity for the school district and all of the individuals that make it up, the press release said.

Scout Executive of the Columbia Montour Council Paul Knox said he looks forward to recognizing Mathias.

"Harry is well-known in the area for his community service," Knox said. "It is an honor to recognize him for his service in so many leadership roles."

Bloomsburg Carpet Industries Inc. will also be recognized as a Distinguished Corporate Citizen.

The company has supported community organizations since its founding in 1976 under the leadership of the Habib family, according to Knox.

Mathias and Bloomsburg Carpet Industries Inc. will be formally recognized at the council's Leadership Dinner on Oct. 27 at the Pine Barn Inn in Danville.

Reservations to attend the dinner can be made by calling 570-784-2700 or visiting the Columbia-Montour Council at 5 Audubon Court in Bloomsburg. Reservations must be made by Oct. 10, the press release said.
