Sports Commanders at Cardinals: What's Plan for Forbes?

The Washington Commanders head to Arizona to take on the Cardinals at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on Sunday.

Last year's first-round pick, cornerback Emmanuel Forbes, had thumb surgery but will make his return to the field against the Cardinals. Commanders defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. spoke to the media and partially revealed some of the plan for Forbes.

"What I expect each week, it's going to be different people and I'm not going to sit here and say who's going to be where each week because somebody could get hurt or what have you," Whitt said. "But I expect whoever goes out there to play winning football, I do expect that."

Forbes has been disappointing since being drafted, to say the least. In Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, gave up multiple big plays. Following his injury, rookie Mike Sainristil moved to the outside and has played well.

"When he was last on the field, we all need to improve on making sure that we control the vertical throws," Whitt Jr. said. "That when we give looks to own and understanding where we want to send the ball, if we're outside leverage, be that leverage.

"We're inside, just play the defense that's being ran. And at the same time, and when it's an opportunity to go make a play, go make the play. Let's not see it and understand it and can talk in the meeting room. Let's go make the play when we see it. And so that's what we all need to do."

Forbes will need to perform at a high level to stay in the lineup, however, the Commanders are weak at the corner position in general. With Sainristil moving the outside and doing well, we would expect Forbes to play the slot corner instead just to see how he does there.

The Commanders and Cardinals kickoff at 4:05 p.m. ET from Glendale, Arizona at 4:05 p.m. ET.
