Diversity Equity and Inclusion efforts are topic for next Courageous Conversation in Kenosha

"Discussing, Educating and Informing on DEI" is the topic of the next free Courageous Conversation in Kenosha, to be held on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Kenosha Civil War Museum, 5400 1st Ave.

The free, in-person discussion is sponsored by the Kenosha Coalition for Dismantling Racism. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the event will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Marvin Bembry, a certified leadership trainer/coach and organizational consultant, who is president of MKB Leadership Transformation, will lead an interactive 90-minute conversation about DEI. Diversity, equity and inclusion efforts grew in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd in May of 2020, but more recent backlash has led some companies to reduce or end those programs.

Bembry has more than 25 years of leadership experience and has coached leaders across many industries, including corporations, educational institutions, government and nonprofit sectors.

"DEI is important for communities because it promotes fairness, respect and inclusion for all members, regardless of their background," Bembry said. "By embracing diversity, communities become stronger and more resilient, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual understanding among residents. Equity ensures that everyone has access to the same opportunities and resources, reducing disparities and improving overall well-being. Inclusion helps to build trust, social cohesion and a more vibrant community where all voices are heard and valued. In essence, DEI strengthens community by creating a more just, connecting and thriving environment for everyone."

Adelene Greene, a founding member of the Kenosha Coalition for Dismantling Racism, encourages the public to attend the Courageous Conversation whether they are pro or con about DEI efforts.

"This will be a great opportunity to discuss, to become educated and be informed about DEI," Greene said.

There will be a short annual meeting of the Kenosha Coalition for Dismantling Racism prior to the start of the Courageous Conversation led by Yolanda Jackson-Lewis, the organization's president. People in the community can learn about the Coalition's accomplishments and vision for the future.
