Evanston Fire Department teaches residents emergency preparedness skills
EVANSTON, Ill. – The Evanston Fire Department's Office of Emergency Management hosted an emergency preparedness fair Saturday, equipping residents of all ages with practical and life-saving tools.
Folks from all stages of life were invited to Evanston's Robert Crown Community Center to gain valuable information that just might save a life.
"Everybody can get a chance to learn something by the books that they have and by the other stuff," fifth grade student Jacob Chmilenko said.

One of the hands-on trainings offered included learning CPR.
"There are statistics out there that people are going to be more likely to have to provide that service if needed, so we want to make sure people are prepared," Division Chief Kimberly Kull said.
First responders also showcased a drone. The technology is now used quite often when searching for someone or surveying a disaster scene. Agencies and organizations were also at Saturday's event to share information about cybersecurity, gun safety and suicide awareness and prevention.
Firefighters refreshed residents on what to do in case of a fire, while representatives from various groups shared crucial information about safety during a natural disaster, how to stop a severe bleed and what to do in the event of an active shooter.
"I think it's a very useful event, especially for young kids," fair attendee Ellada Puhaiko said.

Whether young or a little more seasoned, organizers said it's vital for everyone to have the tools needed to save their life or someone else's in the event first responders are delayed getting to a scene.
"For a larger incident, it might take us a little time. So, we want to be able to give people the skills so they can protect themselves and that's really critical," Kull said.
