Ex F1 paramedic takes on ambulance education role

A former lead paramedic at Silverstone motor racing track has been appointed Guernsey Ambulance Service's head of resilience and education.

John Atkins trained as a paramedic in the Bailiwick of Guernsey and has held senior roles in the ambulance service in the UK and in the island. At Silverstone he was in charge of medical care during races such as the British Grand Prix between 2018 and 2021.

In Guernsey, he will be responsible for clinical education as well as risk management and business continuity.

Mr Atkins said: "I am delighted to have rejoined Guernsey's Ambulance Service and to be heading up emergency planning and education for the organisation."

He said his time away from the service had been "hugely valuable and has broadened my perspectives and I return to my roots all the stronger for it".

Mr Atkins joined the service at 15 years old and has worked as assistant training manager at the States of Guernsey's Institute of Health and Social Care Studies since he returned to the island, as well as a part-time paramedic.
