Guildford: Clean air day to come to Surrey town

Guildford is to hold an initiative to encourage motorists to choose alternative travel to boost air quality in the town.

The Cleaner Air Day on 29 September invites residents and drivers to walk, cycling or use public transport.

There will be several free activities, such as e-bikes, a free bike health check and a wide range of market stalls selling sustainable goods.

Merel Rehorst-Smith, Guildford Borough Council's lead for regulatory services, said: "The quality of our air affects everyone, that's why we all have a role to play in improving it."

The public will learn how to do more to tackle air pollution from researchers at University of Surrey, as well as alternative transport options.

There will also be the chance to use a climbing wall, learn circus skills and have a go on new e-bikes.

Councillor Merel Rehorst-Smith said: "There are simple things everyone can do that make a big difference.

"The first thing we can all do is cut down our car use.

"If you're coming to Cleaner Air Day in Guildford, think about how you're getting there. Do you live close by? Swap the car for walking or cycling.

"If you're coming from further away, share a ride with friends, get the bus or train, or even drive or cycle partway and use public transport to reach your final destination."

The event is fully funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
