IE Varsity’s Week 5 football roundup: Big Bear sets state rushing record

The Big Bear football team set a state record with 761 rushing yards, and the Bears ran away with a 76-35 victory over Whittier Christian in a Mesquite League opener Friday evening.

The previous state record for rushing yards in a single game, according to the Calhisports.com record book, was 736 yards, which was set by Downey Life Christian against Twin Pines during the 1992 season. The previous Inland record was 711 rushing yards, set by Centennial against Upland back in 2013.

Big Bear (4-1 overall) averaged 16.2 yards per carry and set the new record on only 47 carries.

Aiden Brewer led the way with 260 yards and five touchdowns on 11 carries, Brennen Berge ran for 199 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, and Mateo Danneberg added 189 yards and three scores on 14 carries. Isaiah Ramirez had 111 yards and a touchdown on six carries.

Big Bear is set to play its first on-campus football game Friday night against Western Christian. The event was postponed twice because of the Line fire.

Vista del Lago 39, La Quinta 27: Josiah Dupree Boyd threw four touchdown passes as the Ravens erased a 24-0 deficit to win a nonleague game Friday. Vista del Lago (5-0) scored the final 32 points of the game. Cameon Sims caught three touchdown passes for the Ravens, and Fabian Bolanos had a pair of touchdown catches.

Santiago 40, Adelanto 20: Clayton Plewe and Oscar Acosta combined to throw for 312 yards and four touchdowns as the Sharks won a nonleague game Thursday. Gage McCorkell caught six passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns, and Ryan Wilson also had two touchdown catches for Santiago (1-4). Martin Salgado registered 3 1/2 sacks, forced two fumbles and also recovered a fumble to lead the defensive effort by the Sharks.

Los Osos 40, Nogales 0: Zenen Pena threw two touchdown passes as the Grizzlies cruised to a nonleague win Friday. Los Osos is 5-0 for the first time in program history.

California School for the Deaf-Riverside 54, California School for the Deaf-Fremont 0: Kaden Adams threw two touchdown passes, ran for one score and returned an interception for another touchdown as the Cubs won their annual rivalry game Saturday. Matthew Silvay had a pair of touchdown runs for CSDR (4-0).

Corona 34, Rancho Alamitos 0: Will Hitchcock passed for 274 yards and five touchdowns as the Panthers won a nonleague game Friday, Frankie Mendez (120 yards) and Elijah Marshall (94 yards) each caught two touchdown passes for Corona (2-3).

Citrus Hill 42, Notre Dame 0: Ricky Green tossed two touchdown passes and added another score on the ground as the Hawks won a nonleague game Thursday. Samuel Creech had a pair of scoring runs for Citrus Hill (2-3).

San Gorgonio 41, Cathedral City 8: Jacob Russell threw for 174 yards and three touchdowns as the Spartans won a nonleague game Friday, Daron Tyson ran for 115 yards and two scores, and Kaleb Taylor had two touchdown catches for San Gorgonio (4-0).

Elsinore 11, Diamond Ranch 7: Camden Webb registered a pair of interceptions as the Tigers won a nonleague game Friday. Kruse Podsiadly scored the lone touchdown for Elsinore (2-3).

Aquinas 49, Xavier Prep 14: Malachi Jones ran for three touchdowns in leading the Falcons to a nonleague win Friday. Aquinas (3-2) scored all seven touchdowns on the ground.

Moreno Valley 28, Chaffey 12: Syree Matthew threw one touchdown and scored once on the ground as the Vikings (3-2) won a nonleague game Friday.

Carter 49, Rialto 6: Jordan McKinney, Andre Thompson and Jayson Bostock scored two touchdowns apiece as the Lions won a nonleague game Friday, McKinney finished the game with 163 rushing yards, and Bostock caught three passes for 124 yards, Ryder Carson passed for 184 yards and two touchdowns for Carter (2-2).

Arrowhead Christian Academy 41, Bellflower 0: Cole Fornelli tossed four touchdown passes as the Eagles won a nonleague game Friday, Toby Fisher had two interceptions for Arrowhead Christian (1-3).

Canyon Springs 27, Montclair 10: Andre Larry ran for 100 yards and a touchdown as the Cougars won a nonleague game Friday, Dustin Love returned an interception for a touchdown for Canyon Springs (4-1). Isaac Medina and Abraham Gil combined to run for 207 yards for Montclair (2-4).

Sonora 65, Redlands East Valley 42: Isaac Vitela threw for 333 yards and three touchdowns and added 83 yards and two scores on the ground but the Wildcats lost a nonleague game Friday, Ivan Corona caught nine passes for 162 yards and a touchdown for REV (0-5).

Rubidoux 17, Lakeside 3: Elijah Cruz ran for 74 yards and two touchdowns and also kicked a field goal as the Falcons won a nonleague game Wednesday. Junior Pena forced two fumbles on defense for Rubidoux (3-2).

Hamilton 47, St. Jeanne de Lestonnac 12: William Hamlett ran for 205 yards and two touchdowns as the Bobcats won a Manzanita League game Friday, Joey Reyes also scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground for Hamilton (2-3, 2-0).
