LOUISVILLE Mike Maynard, the director of Hillcrest-Bruce Mission, was the recipient of several awards recently.

WellCare of Kentucky hosted its fifth annual Community Health Champions Awards at Churchill Downs. According to a news release, the Community Health Champions Awards honor individuals and organizations throughout the Commonwealth that play a pivotal role in removing barriers, improving health outcomes and supporting community well-being.

Maynard is this year's Region 7 winner.

Hillcrest-Bruce Mission was founded in 1971 with a vision to alleviate the suffering caused by generational poverty.

With Maynard at the helm, the Mission has grown its reach and impact by expanding its facilities and programs to also help meet clients' spiritual, physical, emotional, educational and social needs, according to the release from WellCare.

"I see our Community Health Champions as examples of the best of Kentucky," said WellCare of Kentucky Plan President Corey Ewing. "Each of these individuals and organizations has worked to ensure that Kentuckians are physically, emotionally and mentally healthy — and they did it in deeply personal ways, giving their time, talent and heart in the process."

Maynard, through the Mission, has helped hundreds find homes, vehicles, jobs and earn college degrees. Recently, the Hillcrest-Bruce Mission transformed a food pantry into a shopping experience where families could choose what they need.

According to the release, this year's 12 winners were selected from more than 250 nominations statewide. Those honored represent the eight Kentucky Medicaid regions, three outstanding health care providers and one statewide winner. WellCare awarded a $3,000 grant to each of the regional winners and a $5,000 grant to the statewide winner.
