MLB regular season ends Sunday, playoffs to begin Oct. 1

( NewsNation ) — The Major League Baseball regular season wraps up Sunday, marking the end of an era for the Oakland Athletics and the end of record losing for the Chicago White Sox.

The 30 MLB teams played the regular season between March 20 and Sunday, Sept. 29.

This was the final year the Oakland Athletics played at Oakland Coliseum, the team's home since 1968. The next three seasons will be in Sacramento at Sutter Health Park before permanently relocating to Las Vegas where a new ballpark is being built. The A's played its final game in Oakland Wednesday in front of a sold-out crowd, losing to the Texas Rangers 5-1.

The Chicago White Sox hit a record this year – a losing record. The Sox lost 121 games out of the 162-game season, the most losses in an MLB season ever. By losing 4-1 to the Detroit Tigers Friday, the White Sox officially earned the spot as the worst MLB team. The previous record for the most losses was set by the New York Mets in 1962.

The Los Angeles Dodgers came out on top as the National League West's division winner, and the team's star player has been making headlines. Designated hitter and pitcher Shohei Ohtani became the league's first player in its 154-year history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a season.

Now, Ohtani is still in pursuit of the coveted " Triple Crown ," a difficult task for a player to lead either the American League or the National League in batting average, home runs, and RBIs – something only 10 players total have done since 1920.

Aaron Judge , center fielder for the New York Yankees, is one of only seven players, alongside Babe Ruth, to hit 50 or more home runs with an on-base percentage above .450. He also became the fastest player in MLB history to reach 300 career home runs with his performance against the White Sox on Aug. 14.

The official end to the MLB regular season is Sunday, but two Atlanta Braves-New York Mets games were rescheduled after a postponement due to inclement weather. The two teams will play a doubleheader in Atlanta on Monday.

The Yankees, Cleveland Guardians and Houston Astros from the American League and the Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, and Milwaukee Brewers from the National League have clinched their divisions to advance to the Division Series.

The first playoff games for the wild-card round will be on Oct. 1. The first game of the World Series will be on Oct. 25.
