More than 70 missing in Unicoi County, EMA director says

UNICOI COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) - Unicoi County officials clarified how many people were missing in a press conference Sunday morning,

On Saturday, the Unicoi County Emergency Management Agency said 33 people are missing and there are confirmed deaths.

On Sunday morning, officials updated the number of missing people to 73.

Unicoi County EMA Director Jim Erwin there are an estimated 33 people missing in a news release and later added that there were confirmed deaths as a result of flooding from the Nolichucky River.

He later clarified the information that no deaths were confirmed.

Rescuers found a casket floating through the debris and were working to identify the person.

Erwin added that the river is believed to have swelled about 30 feet, which caused widespread destruction of property and structures.

"We are extremely proud of the selfless response mounted immediately and decisively by our local responders, who continue to work alongside assisting agencies to assess the extent of the damage," Erwin said.

Erwin said anyone unable to get in touch with a friend or loved one in the affected area is asked to call 423-560-0261. He also said a donation collection center had been established at Southside FWB Church, located at 1313 Chestoa Pike in Erwin.

Also affected by the flooding in Erwin, emergency crews had to rescue more than 50 employees and patients from the Unicoi County Hospital roof after they became trapped on Friday.
