New York Yankees vs. Pittsburgh Pirates: Clarke Schmidt vs. Bailey Falter

S.Wilson28 min ago
We've reached the end of the 2024 Yankees ' regular season. Today, they'll take on the Pirates Game 162, which doesn't mean much in the standings. The Yankees are locked into the best record in the AL and unable to catch the Dodgers for the best overall record. With the Pirates also not playing for anything, today will be all about getting out of it healthy and ready to go for the postseason, which will begin next Saturday for the Yankees.

The one player who you can definitively say today might mean something for is starting pitching Clarke Schmidt. With Nestor Cortes going down with an injury and Luis Gil struggling yesterday, it's certainly possible a strong outing today could lead the Yankees to opt for Schmidt as the ALDS Game 3 starter. If he's only so-so, he'll probably be in the bullpen for the opening round (where he might be regardless), while having pole position for the fourth starter spot should the Yankees advance further.

Meanwhile, after Anthony Rizzo was hit by a pitch and fractured his fingers yesterday, the Yankees have recalled Ben Rice and given him the start at first base for the season finale. This makes it seem like he had a very good chance of being on the playoff roster, but he may need to make a good impression today to have a chance at being the starter at first base over Oswaldo Cabrera. Besides him, it's a fairly strong lineup, with only Juan Soto, Austin Wells, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. the only players really being rested.

For Pittsburgh, Bailey Falter will take the mound. Falter's put up a slightly below league average 4.26 ERA with a 4.17 FIP in his 27 starts this season. Besides him, the Pirates are mostly running out their regular starters, with the likes of Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz starting at DH and center field respectively.

We hope you can come join us in the game thread for today's action as the Yankees wrap up their AL East-winning 2024 regular season!
