NJ superintendent, school admin husband rake in $600K annually – but actually live in Florida, possibly violating state law

Two New Jersey educators who together make over $600,000 per year reportedly live 1,200 miles away in sunny Florida — which may be a violation of state law.

Teresa Segarra, the superintendent of Maria L. Varisco-Rogers Charter School in Newark, and her husband, Jose Segarra, the school's business administrator, only make a few in-person visits to the school each year, anonymous sources told NJ.com .

The outlet reviewed voting and housing records showing the couple's full-time address is actually Coral Gables , just outside of Miami.

The Segarras, both 79, rake in over $600,000 combined annually, making them two of the state's highest paid educators.

Teresa Segarra is the state's fourth highest paid superintendent, with a salary of $301,600. In 2023, though, she made a total of $323,636, according to NJ.com.

She is paid more than 600 other school district leaders statewide.

Jose Segarra earns $257,802 annually, which is more than all but 22 of the state's school superintendents, NJ.com reported.

The New Jersey First Act , which took effect in 2011, bars public employees from living out-of-state, and includes cops, public school teachers, and administrators.

Exemptions have been granted, but records showed the Segarras never filed for one.

The Post could not reach the couple for comment Saturday.
