Omaha's unseasonably warm weather expected to continue; fire danger increasing

Above normal temperatures and dry weather will continue to have Omaha and eastern Nebraska feeling more like summer than fall this week.

"We're still looking pretty warm for Monday which should be one of the hottest days of the week," Michaela Wood, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Valley, said Sunday. "Highs in the mid-80s are in the forecast all week except for Tuesday."

Monday's high temperature is forecast to be 87 degrees in Omaha, 13 degrees warmer than what's typical for this time of year. A cool front moving into the area early Tuesday is expected to produce a high of 70 or 71 degrees, she said.

"Look for temperatures to bounce back Wednesday, though, with a high in the low 80s," Wood said. "Then, our daily temperatures should be in the mid-80s all the way until Sunday when we're predicting highs in the mid-70s."

Precipitation is not expected, Wood said, any time over the next seven days. That means the danger of wildfires will increase.

"We don't seem to have any decent precipitation chances this week," she said. "The lack of rain, warm temperatures and a low dew point add up to the potential for fire."

There will be very high fire danger in northeast Nebraska on Monday where a fire weather watch will be in effect. The winds turn southwest and then northwest behind the cool front Tuesday in northeast Nebraska, increasing to 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 30 to 35 mph, all while dewpoints begin to drop into the upper 20s to lower 30s. Those gusting winds could trigger a red flag fire warning.

"Fire weather watch will be in effect from northeast Nebraska all back through a good chunk of the state," Wood said.

Temperatures do rebound quickly Wednesday with highs back into the upper 70s to middle 80s. And another dry frontal passage is expected Wednesday night with highs in the mid-80s expected through Saturday.
