Pets of the week: Malcolm needs a calm environment. Mr. Plum is friendly and social

JACKSON, MI - The Jackson County Animal Shelter, 3770 Spring Arbor Road, has many pets available for adoption.

Here are two of them.

Malcolm is a 5-year-old American Staffordshire mix. He is a medium size pup who has shorter legs.

Malcolm came to the shelter from a home where multiple dogs were living in a basement. He was not in the best shape, but he has gained some weight and his skin issues are all gone.

What he is still working on is all the things in life he never experienced in that basement like going outside, rolling in the grass, getting treats, meeting new people and more.

Sometimes he is afraid because new things make him nervous but he is making progress. Slowly we have seen this pup come out of his shell and start wagging his tail. He would do best in a calm environment with a knowledgeable dog owner who can spend time with him.

Mr. Plum is a 3-year-old handsome grey cat with white markings.

Mr. Plum is at the shelter because his owner died. He is a pleasant guy who is friendly, calm and social. He gets along with the other cats where he is housed.

He just tucks those front feet under him and just minds his own business. But, he enjoys being petted and receiving treats.

Dog adoptions require an application, online. A meet-and-greet with a dog also is mandatory. A cat room walk-through is available to test reaction. The dog adoption fee is $150 for medium and large dogs and $250 for puppies and small dogs, which includes vaccinations, microchip and sterilization.

Cat adoption fees are $60 for one cat, $80 for two, which includes applicable tests, vaccinations and spay/neutering.

The shelter's current hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
