'Treasure Island' opens Oct. 4 at Racine Children's Theatre

RACINE, WI — The well-known book "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson will spring to life next week on the stage of the Racine Children's Theatre.

Performances are set for Friday, Oct. 4, through Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Theatre, 2519 Northwestern Ave., Racine.

Two shows each are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 4 and 6 p.m., followed by three to close out the weekend at noon, 2 and 4 p.m.

The magic of the play, according to a press release, comes from the way the entire audience creates a storm at sea, a mosquito-infested jungle and a treasure cave filled with eerie ghosts. Children in the audience will become members of Long John's treacherous pirate gang, while others join Captain Smollet's crew.

Teaming up with the fearsome Ben Bulba, the children must help defeat Red the Pirate Queen and save Long John. They must decide if they should punish Long John or let him sail away forever to inhabit children's dreams.

This show relies heavily on participation with the children in the audience, with rambunctious pirates encouraging the use of imagination throughout the show.

"Treasure Island" will be performed by Sparklight Productions and is sponsored by S.C. Johnson. Packy, the Racine Children's Theatre's friendly elephant mascot, will greet the audience at the performance.

Each show is just more than an hour long and provides great ways to introduce children to theater and the arts while creating new memories, the release states. The performance is recommended for ages 4 and older.

Season tickets are available for $20, "Packy" passes for $24 and individual tickets are $7 for all ages with general seating for each performance.

To purchase tickets, call the Racine Theatre Guild at 262-633-4218, visit www.racinetheatre.org or stop by the Box Office on weekdays from noon to 6 p.m. and 90 minutes prior to each performance.
