Dr. William B. Scholten (Bill), 89, of Denver, CO, passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer.

Helping thousands suffering with mental illness, psychiatrist Dr. Scholten enjoyed a long career, Survived by his wife of nearly 24 years, Glea Rietema Scholten, his three children, daughter Anna Chapek, and sons, Gerhard and Sherman, Bill was born and raised in Hull, IA. He went to Calvin Col in Grand Rapids, MI (BS) and Northwestern Univ in Chicago, IL (MD) and a residency at the Menninger School of Psychiatry, in Topeka, KS. Bill served as a Captain in the U.S. Army, as Chief of Neuropsychiatry at Bassett Army Hosp in Fairbanks, AK. After the Army, Bill moved to CO, and worked at Bethesda Hosp where he rose to Chief Medical Officer (CMO). After Bethesda, he worked as CMO at Pikes Peak Mental Health in Colo Springs. In 2001, Bill stepped down as CMO, but remained on staff at Pikes Peak. Just short of practicing for 50 years, he retired at the age of 79. He often commented he retired, "At the top of his game." A statement echoed by his colleagues. Over all the years of his life, two things remained important to Bill, improving one's self through education and helping people in need.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at 11:00 am at Hope Fellowship Church, 2400 S Ash St., Denver, CO 80222
