757 businesses come together to raise awareness for domestic violence

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Thursday marked National Wear Purple Day, as the Samaritan House hosted a fundraiser to raise awareness for domestic violence.

"Domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual assault happens every day, unfortunately, especially with today's political climate," said Tom Higgins, Samaritan House development director. "We've seen a big increase in instances of violence all over the place. So this is a day where we can not only raise awareness, but funds to help those victims who have been injured."

Businesses across the 757 are painting the area purple. In Norfolk, Todd Jurich's Bistro is participating.

"Because they've done such great things and we just want to be a part of it," said Dana Jurich with Todd Jurich's Bistro, "and to donate a part of our proceeds to help the ones in need."

Specifically in Hampton Roads, the Samaritan House has found domestic violence more common given the areas' population.

"We do see a higher prevalence, specifically because the military's here," Higgins said. "A lot of times when Navy men get back from deployment, they're gone for six, eight, 12 months. There's a lot of PTSD or anxiety or stress built up that they may take out on their partner."

Higgins said its an issue that often gets overlooked.

"So with domestic violence, a lot of times the victim, they don't realize they're in a violent relationship," Higgins said. "So a lot of times the abuser will say, 'Oh, you made me do it,' or 'I'm sorry, please forgive me. Give me another chance.' And most times, it takes between nine and 11 times for a victim to try to leave before they finally do break away."

All funds raised from participating businesses will help victims who have been injured. The Samaritan House is opening a shelter for victims of domestic violence in November.
