2 facing charges in Palisade shooting and car chase
MESA COUNTY, Colo. ( KREX ) — The Palisade Police Department and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation have arrested two suspects after an Oct. 8 shooting — and subsequent high-speed car chase — which left a 54-year-old woman in critical condition.
The Palisade Police Department said in a release investigators believe the suspects, 27-year-old Zachary David Bayhan from Delta and 32-year-old Jamie Hopper, were involved in "a drug deal gone bad."
Investigators believe the two wanted drugs from the victim without intending to pay for them. According to the release, the pair allegedly arranged for another man, age 26, to introduce the couple to the 54-year-old woman near a storage facility in the 200 block of Palisade's West Third Street.
Investigators believe Bayhan shot at the 54-year-old woman as she drove away, then stole the 26-year-old's car, initiating a high-speed chase that ended with his arrest in Delta County.
The 54-year-old woman, who was shot in the shoulder and crashed her car at the Golden Gate Gas Station on Elberta Avenue, is expected to recover.
Bayhan's charges include the following:
Attempted second-degree murder.
