6 FIRST ALERT WEATHERY DAY: Intense heat & high fire danger Saturday

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Today is a 6 First Alert Weather Day due to the intense heat that is on the way this afternoon. We could approach record highs and threaten all time October records before a cold front drops in.

Strong southwest wind gusts up until 3pm will increase the fire danger as they gust to near 40 mph at times. Combine that with dry conditions and dry air and that will increase the fire danger all around the area. Red Flag Warnings are in place due to the high fire danger and the potential for those to spread.

Even after the front when the cooler air starts to move in, the northwest wind will still gust to 30 mph.

We should see our temperatures spike in the mid 90s near 3pm today in both Omaha and Lincoln.

We should feel the temperatures drop pretty quickly between 3pm and sunset around 7pm behind the front. That should make for a rather enjoyable evening minus any wind gusts.

Cooler air then settles in for the rest of the weekend with highs on Sunday struggling to make it into the lower 70s. That is about near average.

Dry weather continues to be the story all of next week as we make a run at 90 degrees AGAIN by the end of next week.
