An inmate was murdered at the El Paso County Jail Annex Monday night.

Officials with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said they found the inmate unresponsive inside his cell.

Medical staff immediately responded to provide medical aid but the inmate was already dead.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office Major Crime Unit and Texas Rangers began an investigation.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the inmate had been assaulted and that his death was a result of a homicide.

The inmate was identified as 57-year-old Jesus Torres.

Torres was originally booked on June 8 for possession of a controlled substance and probation violation.

Detectives identified six inmates assigned to the same cellblock who are responsible for causing the death of Torres.

Those inmates were identified as 31-year-old Manuel Alejandro Vargas, 18-year-old Juan Alberto Ortiz, 23-year-old George Lopez, 38-year-old Jesus Adrian Rocha, 29-year-old Jovani Dionicio Ramos, and 25-year-old Christian Carillo.

All of them were charged with murder with the exception of Ortiz. He is charged with capital murder.

Warrants were obtained for these six inmates, and they have been subsequently rebooked on the added charges.

Jail administrators from both the Downtown Facility and the Jail Annex are currently working on separating inmates (to include placing certain inmates in individual "lock-down" cells) in anticipation of potential retaliation over this homicide.
