5 killed when plane crashes through airport fence upon takeoff, hits car

MESA, Ariz. ( KPHO /Gray News) - Arizona authorities say an investigation is underway into what caused a plane crash that killed several people Tuesday afternoon near a Mesa-area airport. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, a Honda HA-420 jet attempted to abort takeoff before it crashed through an airport perimeter fence and collided with a vehicle. The crash happened around 4:45 p.m. near Greenfield and McKellips roads , just southwest of Falcon Field Airport. Aerial video from the scene showed heavy smoke billowing where the airplane and vehicle collided. Five people were aboard the plane, four of whom died at the scene. They have been identified as:Spencer Lindahl, age 43 Rustin Randall, age 48 Drew Kimball, age 44 Graham Kimball, age 12 Sources confirmed that Randall was the pilot with the group flying to Provo, Utah. Mesa police say one person on the plane survived and was sent to the hospital with burn injuries. The driver of the vehicle was also killed in the fiery crash but has not yet been identified since next-of-kin notifications were ongoing.
