2025 NFL Draft: Key starter and depth options for the Lions to consider

S.Martinez22 min ago
The Detroit Lions, like many teams this season, have been hit hard by injuries — from starters to second-string players.

Losing Marcus Davenport for the season and Derrick Barnes for significant time, along with Ifeatu Melifonwu yet to take a snap, has been far from ideal for Detroit. Looking ahead to next year's draft, adding young, quality depth — and perhaps another starter at safety — could be a priority for the Lions.

One thing is certain: under the current regime of general manager Brad Holmes and coach Dan Campbell, the Lions arguably haven't missed when it comes to drafting and adding talent they believe can help them win. Furthermore, if there's a player they like but aren't in a position to draft, Holmes isn't hesitant to move up and secure someone they feel fits their culture.

Here's a look at three players to watch during this week's college football matchups:

Howard Cross III, Defensive Lineman, Notre Dame

Cross has performed well over his past few seasons at Notre Dame and is off to a strong start with nine total tackles and two sacks in three games. He's earned respect as a solid threat in the pass rush. With DJ Reader's injury history and Alim McNeill recently banged up, taking a chance on Cross to add depth to the defensive line would be a smart move. Scouts project him as a Day 2 or 3 pick.

Malaki Starks, Safety, Georgia

Starks faces a big challenge as the playmaker for the Bulldogs' secondary this weekend. His performance could have College Football Playoff implications and impact his positioning in next April's draft.Through three games, Starks has 11 total tackles and one interception.

Barrett Carter, Linebacker, Clemson

Carter's athleticism is highly regarded, making him a position-less threat on defense, with blitzing, gap-penetrating, and big-nickel abilities. In two games this season, he has 10 total tackles. Early projections have him as a late first-round pick, but if he slips to Day 2, the Lions should do whatever it takes to secure him.
