PEORIA (25News Now) - Two people were hit by vehicles Monday evening just after dark. Driving on the Illinois county roads at night is a different story. “I know everybody wants to get home after work. I notice it more around this time of year because it’s not daylight as long. It’s 4:30pm, 5 o’clock and people are getting off work and people are getting off work and it’s already dark. We have been noticing that a lot.” Explains Trooper Jayme Bufford with the Illinois State Police. The conditions of the two people injured are not known at this time. Here are a few tips for both pedestrians and drivers need to know to make sure everyone is safe: Bufford says, “as a pedestrian, if you are out there walking in the roadway, which I do not recommend, especially on busier roadways, wear something bring, something reflective so that the motorists can see you. As motorists, the biggest thing is not to be distracted. Put your phone away. Pay attention. A lot of times, it’s on the pedestrian for not wearing those bright colored clothing.” Wednesday’s holiday travel is expected to break records. More than 55 million people are estimated to hit the roads up 2.3% more than in years past, making it the 3rd highest travel year for the Thanksgiving holiday since AAA began tracking conditions in 2000. “We do have an increased troopers working on the roadway and we do have special patrols going out during the holiday weekend as well. Whether they are looking for DUIs or making sure you’re wearing a seatbelt. So yes, we will be out there.” Finishes Bufford.
