2025 receiver Anson Lewis breaks down Mississippi State decision
Throughout the recruiting process, there was one constant with 2025 receiver Anson Lewis . That constant was his interest in Mississippi State and relationship with receivers coach Chad Bumphis.
So on Friday, the On3 three-star prospect from Oak Grove High School followed maintained that consistency and committed to Mississippi State. Lewis is rated as the nation's No. 98 receiver and the state's No. 16 prospect by On3 composite rankings.
"It's just always been good with Mississippi State and that's why I committed," Lewis remarked. "I stayed in touch with Coach Bump (Bumphis) and we've had good conversations. We've always had a good relationship and I think he's a great coach. But he's also a great person and he knows what recruits go through."
Lewis held several other Power 4 offers on the recruiting trail. As his recruitment drew to a close, he mentioned the schools that recruited him the hardest. Lewis becomes the 18th commitment in State's Class of 2025 and the second commitment of the week, joining juco defensive lineman Mason Clinton who committed on Thursday.
"At the end, I would say State, Ole Miss and Missouri were on me the hardest," explained Lewis. "Missouri was on my hard for a long time and those were the main ones along with South Alabama and Southern Miss."
Lewis has taken his share of trips to Starkville this year and each visit to campus, he felt a little more at home. Whether it was mingling with the coaches or players, Lewis felt at ease every time he was around State's program.
"Mississippi State was the one I was the most comfortable with," mentioned Lewis. "I just felt at home there, from the coaching staff to the players. It's all cool there and they make you feel at home. I just love it there."
Lewis spent the previous two seasons at Columbia High School before transferring to Oak Grove this past summer. He has played a pivotal role for Oak Grove's passing game and opens the postseason later on Friday against Biloxi in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs.
"It's been good going to Oak Grove," remarked Lewis. "I've been playing everywhere at receiver, at slot and on the outside. I played defense in one game but that's been it."
Entering that playoff game, Lewis has totaled 32 catches for 417 yards and a team-best nine touchdowns. He noted of his improvements this year at his position and his thoughts on his productivity.
"Overall, I can see my improvements from last year," the 6-foot-2 and 190-pound Lewis added. "I've gotten better with my route running and my separation. My speed has improved, too, and I've just been working on everything with my craft."
At the next level, Lewis is expected to line up at outside receiver for the Bulldogs. And being part of head coach Jeff Lebby's offense was another factor in his decision-making process.
"I love Lebby's offense," noted Lewis. "I feel like he has really changed the game around there on offense. He likes to put the ball in the air more compared to their previous offenses. I really like that offense and I like the way Coach Lebby coaches."
With his decision, Lewis becomes the third receiver commitment for State's Class of 2025. He joins Louisiana products and On3 three-star prospects Davian Jackson and Ferzell Shepard.
