3 students receive scholarships from family of fallen Macon County deputy

MACON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Three students will now have a chance to pursue a career in criminal justice or law enforcement thanks to the Sgt. William Cherry Memorial Scholarship .

Macon County Sgt. William Cherry was killed in the line of duty on July 29, 2023, after investigators said he was hit head-on by a drunk driver who crossed over the center line on Highway 10 in Lafayette.

After Cherry's death, the community rallied behind his widow. News 2 also helped by raising nearly $20,000 for the family through the "News 2 Gives Back" initiative for fallen first responders. When accepting the funds, Cherry's family decided to pay it forward and honor the longtime deputy's legacy.

On Saturday, Oct. 5, Cherry's father and widow presented Addison Woodard, Caden Huntsman, and Isaac Kirby plaques and checks as recipients of the Sgt. William Cherry Memorial Scholarship. The three were selected from 13 entries.

The fallen sergeant's family hopes to award scholarships to deserving students on a yearly basis.
