2 wastewater overflows reported in West Mobile County

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Health officials in Mobile County are warning residents following two sanitary sewer overflows in the past week.

According to the Mobile County Health Department, the Alabama Department of Emergency Management reported on the two overflows from Corex Utilities that happened at the Copeland Wastewater Treatment Plant in western Mobile County.

Officials shared the following information about the two overflows:

  • The first overflow was reported to have started on Oct. 31 and ended Nov. 1. Officials said the cause was stormwater and that the overflow took place in the fenced area around the treatment plant. Approximatley 5,000 gallons of wastewater absorbed into the ground as a result of the overflow.

  • Officials said the second overflow started Nov. 6 and ended Nov. 7. It was also caused by stormwater and took place in the fenced area around the treatment plant, according to the release. Approximatley 800 gallons of wastewater overflowed and was absorbed into the ground.

    Following the above overflows, Mobile County Health Officer Dr. Kevin Michaels advised that area residents take precautions for their health including washing hands and clothing after coming into contact with standing water.
