‘A long time coming’: Attleboro opens year-round homeless shelter

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — A new homeless shelter officially opened in Attleboro Wednesday morning, nearly eight months after breaking ground.

Unlike traditional shelters, Ascension House is designed as a permanent, year-round facility for men and women. In addition to 18 emergency beds, the building includes 22 studio apartments for those transitioning out of homelessness.

The shelter will be fully funded, professionally staffed, and provide mental health, addiction, and literacy support services.

Supporters said the Pleasant Street facility is a response to the persistent housing crisis impacting communities nationwide.

"This project has been a long time coming," said Steve DuPlessie, founding president of the Northern Bristol County Assistance Collaborative. "We are very grateful to all who have played a role, large or small."

A judge recused himself Tuesday from presiding over Arizona's fake electors case after an email surfaced in which he told fellow judges to speak out against attacks on Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign for the presidency.
