A46: Pupils offered support after 'upsetting' school bus crash

Pupils involved in an "upsetting" bus crash with a lorry in Leicestershire will be offered support when they return to classes, the school's trust has said.

The bus was travelling from the St Paul's Catholic School in Leicester on an educational trip when the crash happened on the A46, near Syston, on Thursday.

Ten schoolchildren were taken to hospital as a precaution after suffering minor injuries in the collision, which happened at about 9:30 GMT.

The children involved in the crash will be able to access counselling support when they return to school.

The St Thomas Aquinas Multi-Academy Trust, which operates the school, said the bus was carrying 37 pupils and two staff members on its way to the Rosmini Centre.

The trust said bus crashed into railings following the impact of the collision.

Neil Lockyer, chief executive officer of the trust, said: "We would like to thank the emergency services and school staff for their prompt and effective response and support in relation to this incident.

"Incidents like this are shocking and upsetting and consequently, students and staff have been able to access counselling support as they return to school over the next few day."

National Highways said the northbound carriageway re-opened at 14:00.
