Aftermath of Five Points South mass shooting leaves families devastated

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — In the aftermath of a mass shooting in Birmingham, the victims' families are calling for justice amid grief.

When Candance Kemp heard shots were fired at the Hush Lounge, she left her home in Bessemer and began searching for her daughter at local hospitals. Tragically, Birmingham police informed her that Anitra Holloman was among the four dead

The 21-year-old was a single mother and Parker High School graduate who was studying at Lawson Community College. Kemp said her daughter was out celebrating Jackson-Olin Alumni weekend at Hush with friends when the unthinkable happened.

"She was outside waiting to get inside the club and gunshots rung out, and they said my baby was struck," Kemp said. "She didn't stand a chance, she died right there on the scene."

Police said multiple shooters fired on a large group of people standing outside on Magnolia Avenue in the Five Points South neighborhood. They believe it was a targeted attack.

"Don't inflict violence on other innocent people because I know my baby had nothing to do with what you all had going on," Kemp said.

The coroner's office identified 27-year-old Tahj Booker, 27-year-old Carlos McCain and 26-year-old Roderick Patterson as the three other victims shot and killed.

Booker's aunt Sheila Everson says he was standing outside with her son, McCain and Patterson, as they were all friends waiting to get into the lounge. Everson's son is expected to survive his injuries.

She believes Booker was shot while trying to shield Holloman. She wants him to be remembered by stories like his final moments alive:

"As a loving caring person, the sweet Teddy Bear that he was," Everson said.
