ALS Association walks to raise local awareness

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - On Saturday, the ALS Association held its Walk to Defeat ALS at Sertoma Park to raise awareness for the disease on a local level and assist families.

Organizers of the walk said that the "Ice Bucket Challenge," which was meant to raise awareness for the same disease, made an impact.

"In 10 year's time since the 'Ice Bucket Challenge,' which raised $150 million, new genes have been discovered to work towards a genetic treatment of familial ALS. We've increased our clinics across the country by more than 100," said ALS Association Development Director Erin Hill.

Money raised from the walk will go towards further ALS research in the hope of finding a cure.
