Amarillo voters weigh in on possibly becoming Sanctuary City for the Unborn
Voters in Amarillo are deciding if they want their city to become a . If Proposition A passes, Amarillo will join Lubbock, Abilene, Odessa and San Angelo in having this ordinance.
The reaction is mixed. ABC 7 News talked to both sides on this issue to see why they're passionately for or against the measure on the ballot.
"Texas already has some of the most extreme abortion laws in the country and we do not need more government overreach," said Lindsay London, co-founder of Amarillo Freedom Pact.
"This is not government overreach this is protecting life," said Mark Lee Dickson, pastor & co-author of the Sanctuary City of the Unborn for Amarillo.
Those who are in favor of designating Amarillo as a city for the sanctuary of the unborn say there is plenty of misinformation about their cause.
"I think that we need to combat the lies that are going around about Prop. A and I want these babies for them to have a chance to have birthdays and be able to live out their destinies," said Wendy Frick, a supporter of Prop. A.
For those who are against Prop A, they say their side of the argument is that this simply cannot be enforced.
"Travel bans are unconstitutional if for some crazy reason this thing does pass it will get struck down by the Supreme Court," said Tim Benson, against Prop. A.
"My reason for voting against Proposition A is that we already have it covered through the state without SB aid which does the same thing that Prop. A does here in town," said James Schenck, against Prop. A.
If voters approve Prop. A, The City of Amarillo would become the 70th city in the country to have such an ordinance.
This ordinance closes up many loopholes in the Texas Heartbeat Act and other state abortion laws this is all about protecting life," said Dickson.
"Totally infringes on your constitutional rights as a citizen of Amarillo, and I think that is something on both sides of this issue, pro-life, pro-choice, Republican or Democrat or Trump supporter or Harris supporter that we can come together and say this is not welcome in our community," said Courtney Brown, against Prop. A.
"I am against Prop. A because it would infringe on our first amendment right to free speech and freedom of association," said Kat Browning, against Prop. A. "It also criminalizes care for people who need support during a difficult time."
In the end, voters will ultimately decide if Amarillo becomes a sanctuary city for the unborn or if it is voted down.
