ST. LOUIS — Local American Freight stores are slated to shutter after its parent company, Franchise Group, Inc., filed for bankruptcy last week.

Franchise Group, a holding company, announced in the bankruptcy that it would wind down American Freight, its Delaware-based discount furniture, mattress and appliance company.

According to a press release, American Freight "has struggled due to sustained inflation and macroeconomic challenges facing the large durable goods sector."

Store closing sales at locations around the country began Nov. 5.

The St. Louis region has American Freight stores in Florissant, Fenton, Overland and Fairview Heights. The retailer has about 350 U.S. locations in 40 states.

Other brands under Franchise Group, including Pet Supplies Plus, The Vitamin Shoppe and Buddy's Home Furnishings, will continue to operate, according to the release.
