Anna Maria football outlasts Husson University

Senior quarterback Ryan Russell threw four touchdown passes and Justin Oliver returned the second-half kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown as Anna Maria College beat Husson University 47-29 in a non-conference football game at Carparso Field in Paxton, Massachusetts, on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams are now 2-2.

Russell threw a 28-yard TD pass to Tyler Bulinski and a 15-yarder to Kevin Acosta Jr. to stake the AMCATS to a 14-0 lead.

Husson quarterback Max Clark tossed a 20-yard TD pass to Cam Holmes to cut the lead in half late in the first period. But a Ryan six-yard TD pass to Tyler Garretson and Ryan Kent's 22-yard field goal in the second quarter expanded the lead to 24-7 before Husson closed out the half with a 16-yard TD run by Jed Lober.

But Oliver's kickoff return to open the second half and Russell's 25-yard TD pass to Davien Atkinson swelled the lead to 37-14.

Clark threw his second touchdown pass, a 36-yarder to Nason Berthelette, cutting the lead to 37-21 late in the third quarter.

Kent kicked a 28-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to all but sew up the win.

Clark ran four yards for a TD before Anna Maria's Jamal Cariglia capped the scoring with a one-yard run.

Russell completed 19 of 30 passes for 284 yards and four touchdowns.

Acosta and Garretson each caught five passes for 84 and 57 yards, respectively.

Cariglia gained 85 yards on 31 carries.

Clark completed 18 of 39 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted twice.

Jacob Lenz caught four passes for 46 yards. Berthelette had three for 74 yards and Dom Wilson had three for 43 yards.

Lober gained 76 yards on 13 carries.

David Raymond and Jihad Brown had four tackles each to lead Anna Maria, while Husson's Jahmye Tyson had 11 tackles. C.J. Nicely had 11 and Ricky Hendrix had nine.

Husson will play next on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts. Game time is noon.
