AOC appears to invoke climate change in appeal to New York voters: 'It's 70 degrees'
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., on Tuesday appeared to invoke climate change in an appeal to New York voters posted via X.
The congresswoman took to social media ahead of the conclusion of a contentious presidential race. She urged readers to exercise their right to vote given the warm temperatures in her home state.
"It's 70 degrees in New York in the first week of November," she wrote. "Please vote."
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez's office did not respond to a request for comment from The National News Desk seeking clarification on the remark.
The highest recorded Nov. 5th temperature in New York City was 78 degrees, occurring in 1961, according to Extreme Weather Watch. Its all-time low for Nov. 5 was 23 degrees in 1879.
The average high temperature for the city on Nov. 5 is 57.3 degrees and the average low is 44.3 degrees, according to the site. On Nov. 5, 2022, the city recorded a high temperature of 76 degrees.
New York City has not seen snowfall on Nov. 5 since 1933, according to the site.
AOC has previously referred to climate change when making commentary on politics. The representative last month blamed climate change for the hurricanes impacting the southeastern U.S. and accused her Capitol Hill colleagues of contributing to the crisis.
"The hurricane 'machine' is climate change," she wrote. "Cooler ocean temperatures slow hurricane development. As temps rise, more hurricanes grow. The Gulf of Mexico is a major location for warming water."
"The people who bear responsibility are fossil fuel co's + the politicians they buy," she added.
Her claim bears resemblance to a remark by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., who suggested last month the government plays a hand in extreme weather during hurricane season.
"Climate change is the new Covid," she wrote. "Ask your government if the weather is manipulated or controlled. Did you ever give permission to them to do it? Are you paying for it? Of course you are."
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suggested in 2023 former President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" movement was to blame for rising global temperatures, telling X followers to "Thank a MAGA Republican."
"Or better yet, vote them out of office," she added.
