AP Top 25 men’s college basketball: Purdue grabs No. 1; Kansas falls to No. 5

Purdue jumped to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll Monday after winning the Maui Invitational last week , while Kansas fell to No. 5 after losing to Marquette in the semifinals of the Thanksgiving week tournament. Here’s what you need to know:

The Boilermakers (6-0) return to No. 1 after spending seven weeks — over two different stints — at the top of the AP poll last season.

They defeated three of the nation’s top 11 teams — Gonzaga , Tennessee and Marquette — to win it all in Maui and earn 60 of 63 first-place votes this week.

Kansas (5-1) had been No. 1 since the preseason but couldn’t keep the top spot after suffering its first loss of the season in Maui. The Jayhawks bounced back by beating Tennessee in their next game.

Arizona (No. 2), Marquette (No. 3) and UConn (No. 4) each moved up one spot from the previous week’s poll.
