AP Top 25 men’s college basketball: Purdue grabs No. 1; Kansas falls to No. 5

Purdue jumped to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll Monday after winning the Maui Invitational last week , while Kansas fell to No. 5 after losing to Marquette in the semifinals of the Thanksgiving week tournament. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The Boilermakers (6-0) return to No. 1 after spending seven weeks — over two different stints — at the top of the AP poll last season.
  • They defeated three of the nation’s top 11 teams — Gonzaga , Tennessee and Marquette — to win it all in Maui and earn 60 of 63 first-place votes this week.
  • Kansas (5-1) had been No. 1 since the preseason but couldn’t keep the top spot after suffering its first loss of the season in Maui. The Jayhawks bounced back by beating Tennessee in their next game.
  • Arizona (No. 2), Marquette (No. 3) and UConn (No. 4) each moved up one spot from the previous week’s poll.
