Application period open for Political Leadership Institute

ALBANY – Applications are open now through Oct. 14 for the Albany Area Political Leadership Institute (PLI), a nonpartisan program aimed at equipping participants with the knowledge and tools needed to pursue leadership roles in local government.

Now entering its third year, the Political Leadership Institute is designed to develop the next generation of community leaders. The program provides a comprehensive overview of the local political process and prepares participants for roles on appointed boards or in elected office. Through three in-depth sessions, participants will gain valuable insights into government operations, explore opportunities for public service, and learn the essential elements of running a successful campaign.

"The Albany Area Political Leadership Institute reflects our chamber's commitment to developing strong, business-minded leaders who can help shape the future of our community," Bárbara Rivera Holmes, president and CEO of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce and the Albany Area Chamber Foundation, said. "This program not only engages citizens in public service but also equips them with the knowledge and tools needed to create a meaningful impact through leadership."

Since its inception, the PLI has produced graduates who now serve on local boards and have become integral to shaping public policy in Albany. Participants benefit from exclusive networking opportunities, connecting with community leaders and fellow class members from diverse business backgrounds.

"This program prepares emerging leaders for the unique responsibilities of public service," Bridges Sinyard, vice president of Adams Exterminators and chairman of the Albany Area Chamber's Government Affairs Division, said. "The Political Leadership Institute's helps equip future candidates to address key policy issues and make a positive impact."

The 2024-2025 program will run from November 2024 to January 2025. Sessions will cover critical topics such as "Government 101," "Community Issues," and "Appointed Boards and Elected Office."

Applicants will be competitively selected by the PLI Selections Committee, and participation is limited. The program cost is $150, which includes all sessions, materials and some meals. Sessions will take place on the following dates:

• Nov. 14: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (lunch provided; networking social to follow)

• Dec. 5: 1-5 p.m. (networking social to follow)

• Jan. 22: 1-5 p.m. (networking social to follow)

Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Oct. 14 and must be submitted online at bit.ly/24-25PLI. No print applications will be accepted.
