Scranton gets second seed
The University of Scranton women’s soccer team has been named the No. 2
seed in the Atlantic Region for the 2001 NCAA Division III championships.
The Royals (16-3) play at 5 p.m. Friday at Messiah College in Grantham.
Scranton will face the winner of Wednesday’s match between Gwynedd Mercy
(15-4) and Mary Washington College (14-2-3).
Friday’s winners meet at 5 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $4 for adults, $2 for
senior citizens and students and $1 for children under 12.
Misericordia quartet honored
Four members of the College Misericordia field hockey team have been named
to the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference all-star team.
Senior back Sara Shellhammer (Lehighton/Lehighton H.S.) and junior forward
Becky Roman (Meshoppen/Elk Lake) were selected to the first team, senior
forward Andrea Cox (Elysburg/Southern Columbia) was named to the second team,
and junior goalkeeper Liz Kovalchik (Slatington/Northwestern Lehigh) earned
honorable mention.
Keystone is home for playoffs
Keystone College (12-3) will host Brookdale County College of Lincroft,
N.J. at 1 p.m. today in the first round of the Region XIX National Junior
College Athletic Association men’s soccer tournament.
LCCC women place second
Luzerne County Community College finished as the runner-up in the Region
XIX NJCAA women’s volleyball tournament. LCCC lost to Lehigh-Carbon Community
College, 31-29, 30-11 in the title match. LCCC’s Jill Adams and Audra Evanick
were named to the all-tournament team.
L-L grads shine for Drew
Lake-Lehman graduates Leigh Ann Isaac and Colleen Mahon helped Drew
University win the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Conference field hockey
title. Mahon scored twice and Isaac set up the game-winning goal as the
Rangers (13-7) edged Scranton, 3-2, on Saturday.
Sem grad stars for Colgate
Wyoming Seminary graduate Tom McCune, a junior quarterback for Colgate
University, passed for 212 yards and a touchdown on Saturday as the Red
Raiders (5-2 overall, 3-0 Patriot League) edged Lafayette College, 20-16.
WVW grad stars at Marquette
Wyoming Valley West graduate Bethany Harry, a senior at Marquette
University, place 11th overall at the Conference USA Cross Country
championships. Harry finished the 6K course in 20:35.4, was named to the
all-conference team, and help Marquette win the league title.
