The Minot girls and the Fargo North boys are No. 1 in the first Class AA basketball polls of the season.

The Majettes received 14 of the 19 first-place votes to top the girls poll, with No. 2 Grand Forks Red River, the defending state Class A champs, getting the other first first-place nods.

Fargo Davies is third, followed by Legacy and Century.

Bismarck and Jamestown were among other teams to receive votes.

The Spartans, the defending state champs, got 13 of 19 first-place votes to come in No. 1 in the boys poll.

No. 2 Fargo Davies got five first-place votes and No. 4 Century received one first-place vote.

Minot came in third and Bismarck fifth.

Legacy received votes in the poll.

The polls are conducted by the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

The University of Mary men’s track team is picked third and the women’s team fourth in the Northern Sun indoor track preseason coaches polls.

In the men’s poll, Minnesota State-Mankato, the 12-time defending champion, is ranked No. 1. U-Mary received one first-place vote and came in third among the 11 teams.

Raheem Tait-Best and Malakhi Stevenson were named U-Mary’s athletes to watch by league coaches. Tait-Best, a sophomore from Barbados, reached the NSIC indoor finals in the 200 and 400 last season and won the events at the conference outdoor meet, setting NSIC and school records in the 400. He placed 14th in the 400 at the national meet.

Stevenson, a Burlington, Wash., native, was an all-NSIC performer in the multi-events, placing fifth at the outdoor decathlon in 2022 and fourth in 2023 in the indoor heptathlon. He came in second at the conference outdoor decathlon last year.

Minnesota State-Mankato is No. 1 in the women’s poll. U-Mary, which finished in fourth at the conference indoor last spring, got one first-place vote and came in at No. 4 in the 14-team league.

Arianna Passeri ans Sakena Massiah were named U-Mary’s athletes to watch.

Passeri won the NSIC outdoor long jump last season and placed third and the national meet. The Rosemount, Minn., native finished second at the conference indoor and sixth at nationals. She’s a two-time All-American and a al-time all-NSIC performer.

Massiah, a junior from Barbados, placed in the indoor 200 and 1600 relay and earned three all-NSIC outdoor honors with a second-place finish in the 400 and legs on the runner-up 400 and 1600 relays. She also finished fifth in the 400.
