Argentina appeals court confirms guilty verdict for former President Cristina Kirchner

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - A federal appeals court in Argentina upheld a guilty verdict for former President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner on Wednesday.

Kirchner, who served as president for two terms between 2007 and 2015 and then as vice president from 2019 to 2023, was found guilty of defrauding the state and given a six-year prison sentence in December 2022. The case can still be appealed to the Supreme Court.

Iran hanged a 26-year-old man for a second time Wednesday months after a previous execution was halted half a minute in, an NGO said."Ahmad Alizadeh, a talented student, was hanged for the second time on charges of murder, which he denied and claimed he confessed to under torture," said IHR director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, denouncing the "execution machine of the Iranian regime".

A judge recused himself Tuesday from presiding over Arizona's fake electors case after an email surfaced in which he told fellow judges to speak out against attacks on Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign for the presidency. In the Aug. 29 email, Maricopa County Judge Bruce Cohen lamented that he didn't speak out when Harris was called a "DEI hire," believes that white men must speak out against unfair treatment of women, and raised a historical lesson from the Holocaust about the need to speak up when people are attacked. Cohen didn't specify who made the comment regarding Harris.

On Tuesday, the Wichita Police Department released the names of the five men who were found shot to death in south Wichita on Sunday. Police also named the man who they believe was responsible.

An arrest report gives more details about what occurred before a man was shot to death Wednesday in the 3200 block of West Edgewood Avenue. Investigators observed surveillance video that showed the victim driving an orange Chevrolet Camaro with orange rims at the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and New Kings Road, according to the JSO arrest report for Lavertis Reed, 20, who was charged with murder in the shooting. As the victim's vehicle crossed the intersection, a white vehicle with dark rims was observed on the surveillance video driving south at a high rate of speed on New Kings Road, the arrest report states.

In a New York City courtroom, Eric Gonzalez recalled encountering the chaotic struggle in progress, after Daniel Penny had already pinned the man, Jordan Neely, to the train's floor and placed him in a firm chokehold. "I made my presence known to Daniel Penny," Gonzalez told jurors. Penny is facing manslaughter charges in the May 2023 death of Neely, a 30-year-old man who was homeless.

The Oklahoma City Police Department (OCPD) on Saturday released footage showing an officer's alleged use of excessive force against Lich Vu, a 70-year-old Asian man with bone cancer, during a traffic violation encounter in late October.
