Arizona's Lauryn Swann named Big 12 freshman of the week for performance against UNLV
Lauryn Swann's breakout performance this week caught the attention of everyone as she earned the Big 12 Freshman of the Week honor on Monday afternoon.
In the first game of the week, Swann, the 5-7 guard came off the bench near the end of the third quarter and ignited the Wildcats to a 75-66 victory over UNLV. Her 19 points (8 of 9 from the field) came from all three levels — long-range, mid-range and snaking her way through multiple defenders for layups.
She backed up that outing with 12 points against Chicago State on Saturday.
For the week, she shot 64.7% from the field and 66.7% from beyond the arc. She is the first Wildcat to earn a Big 12 weekly honor.
The last UA freshman to win a weekly nod — in the Pac-12 — was Jada Williams at the end of February when the Wildcats beat then-No. 3 ranked Stanford and finished the weekend with a win over Cal. Williams scored 14 of her 23 points in the fourth quarter against Stanford and averaged 21 points in both games. Esmery Martinez also took player of the week honors to give UA their first sweep of weekly awards.
Arizona (5-0) finishes up its second consecutive game on the road Wednesday at NAU. The Wildcats will be home on Saturday with a matchup against Grambling State.
