Arrests made after violent disorder in Newark town centre

Police have arrested three teenagers after a spate of violent disorder across a town centre.

Nottinghamshire Police said officers received numerous calls after a series of offences in Newark on Tuesday.

The force said a man in his 20s was taken to hospital after he was punched at about 16:50 GMT while walking through the market square.

Separate calls at a similar time suggested a group had also been threatening others in the vicinity with a weapon, police added.

This included one man reportedly having a knife pulled on him in Carter Gate, while other people were confronted and threatened.

Also, on 25 October, police say a man in his late 60s was pushed over and had a kick aimed at his head close to the town's market square.

According to the force, a cyclist wearing a balaclava carried out the attack, before pushing a woman who tried to step in and help.

A boy, 17, has been arrested on suspicion of assault, affray, and assaulting an emergency worker.

Two more people – another 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man – have both been arrested on suspicion of assault and affray, police confirmed.

The man was additionally arrested on suspicion of threatening a person with a bladed .

Insp Charlotte Ellam, district commander for Newark and Sherwood, said: "There is absolutely no place in our communities for the violence, disorder and intimidating behaviour shown in these incidents."

She confirmed inquiries into the incidents were ongoing and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
