As Trump lies (and lies and lies) about FEMA, GOP gets called out on Hurricane Helene ‘hypocrisy’

Donald Trump was at it again on Sunday, lying about the Federal Emergency Management Agency's response to victims of Hurricane Helene.

There have been so many Trump lies on the storm that CNN felt compelled on Sunday to post a story: "Fact check: Six days of Trump lies about the Hurricane Helene response."

Despite Republican governors praising the Biden Administration's swift and compassionate response , and GOP representatives pleading with the former president to stop lying, and for his inner circle to stop advising victims not to cooperate with FEMA, Trump keeps telling the same lies at his rallies.

During an exhausting two-hour speech at a rally in Wisconsin on Sunday, Trump said victims of Helene "haven't seen anybody from the federal government yet."

This lie has been widely debunked, including by Republican governors.

Trump, a former president and the Republican presidential nominee, added a lie : "This is the worst response to a storm or a catastrophe or a hurricane that we've ever seen, ever. Probably worse than Katrina," he said.

Trump also has said that FEMA money is being diverted for undocumented immigrants, yet another lie .

After dozens of congressional Republicans voted against FEMA funding , or voted to cut its funding, Trump and his lying GOP enablers were called out on by New York Rep. Daniel Goldman.

"Republicans almost uniformly oppose funding for FEMA," Goldman tweeted . "Yet when a natural disaster happens in their state, they not only come running for FEMA assistance, but they have the gall to complain about how quickly they are getting that assistance. GOP hypocrisy knows no bounds."

Republican South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said at a press conference that federal assistance had "been superb." He said President Joe Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg had called and told him to let them know whatever the state needed. McMaster also said FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell had called.

Glenn Jacobs, mayor of Knoxville, Tenn., tweeted that if MAGA "could maybe put aside hate for a little bit and pitch in to help, that would be great."

Biden, calling Trump a liar , reminded Americans that Trump was president, Trump redirected emergency funds. "Once again, Donald Trump is a liar," Biden tweeted . "He's the guy who redirected relief funds as president. We are moving heaven and earth to make sure that everyone affected by Hurricane Helene gets what they need."

Former Georgia Republican Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan blasted Trump for lying about Hurricane Helene: "The lies are one of the biggest reasons, I am a lifelong Republican supporting Vice President Harris. The lies are dangerous. ... We need to hold him accountable for it."

In a statement , Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina said, ""The last thing that the victims of Helene need right now is political posturing, finger-pointing, or conspiracy theories that only hurt the response effort."
