Aspiring Content Creators Learn That Creating Content Is Actually Work

T.Davis33 min ago

OnlyFans has gained a reputation as an easy way to make a lot of money quickly. It's just getting naked in front of a camera and sharing the content, right? Well, as many aspiring content creators are discovering, it's actually quite a bit more than that. A lot of work goes into creating content, especially content where an X-rating is the main selling point.

It's no secret that many OnlyFans creators do very well financially thanks to their presence on the platform. Some models earn up to six figures through subscription payments and personalized content their loyal followers are willing to pay extra for. Numerous retired athletes and actors, who have stepped away from the Hollywood rat race, have found OnlyFans to be a place where they can make more money while maintaining full control over their creative content—something they never had while working within their industries. Because of their widely publicized success, others looking for an easier way to make ends meet often see the money being raked in and mistakenly think that creating explicit content is easy money. Alas.

An OnlyFans creator named Sarah learned the hard way that making a full-time career out of being a model on the platform isn't as easy as it seems. "I initially got into spicy work because I wanted to make lots of money and thought it was going to be an easy job... I'm completely broke. I lost my house, and yeah, I'm just kind of failing at life at the moment." While this particular creator is passionate about OnlyFans' mission—giving full creative and earning control to its users—the harsh realities of being a content creator on the platform are much starker than they appear from the outside looking in.

When you have full creative control, you make all the decisions, but you also have to make everything happen. Content planning, finding and vetting production partners you feel safe with, shooting content, editing it until you're confident with the final version, promoting it, interacting with your fanbase, planning your wardrobe—or lack thereof—everything falls on the one who owns and operates the channel. The freedom that comes with this is empowering for many, but the sheer amount of work involved in producing decent content without a team is daunting at best and unfeasible at worst. As the channel runner, you're also responsible for dealing with trolls and haters online, and handling all that negativity—not to mention the stigma of being associated with the adult entertainment industry—can drain your emotional energy very quickly. Add the constant pressure to stay updated on trends to evolve your content with your audience's ever-changing tastes, and... yeah. There's nothing easy about any of it.

Statistically, only a small percentage of OnlyFans creators make huge amounts of money. Many consider it a win if they just break even on the expenses associated with running a successful channel (sound and lighting equipment, wardrobe, makeup, advertising, space rental, etc.). For most creators, running their channel is more of a side hustle—albeit a very time- and work-intensive one.

Believing that OnlyFans is easy money is as naive as believing in a money fairy waiting to bless anyone who leaves an offering at her door. It's not easy, and the creators putting in the hours to make it work are earning every dollar they're paid. So, the next time you think of OnlyFans as an easy backup plan, remember: the hustle will be respected, one way or another.
