Auburn man charged with statutory rape

An Auburn man is facing rape charges after allegedly engaging in a relationship with a minor.

Auburn Police Department Capt. Kyle Platt told The Citizen that in late February, the department received information about an adult male engaging in a sexual relationship with a female minor in Auburn.

The girl told police she believed Sakai T. Grimes, 22, of Auburn, was significantly younger than he actually was. However, police determined he was 21 at the time of the relationship, Platt said.

Following the months-long investigation, Auburn police picked Grimes up on Monday in Syracuse on an indictment warrant out of Cayuga County Court.

He was charged with two counts of third-degree rape and four counts of third-degree criminal sexual act, both Class E felonies.
