Wednesday evening, Bakersfield City Council unanimously approved several items on their agenda.

The meeting began with recognizing 14 students from the Kern High School District, who conducted attendance in honor of Bakersfield's 48th annual Teen Government Day.

In a 7-0 vote, council members approved:

  • The purchase of two prefabricated restroom facilities for Jefferson and Stiern Parks
  • Pedestrian safety improvements near Norris Elementary School and Stiern Middle School
  • Bakersfield Police's new five-year contract with AXON Enterprise for body-worn cameras
  • Adjustment of the Park Development and Improvement fee
  • The 2025 Calendar for regular city council meetings, department budget presentations, and hearings
  • Shifting to public comment, several community members expressed their concerns about the city's treatment of homeless people.

"Punishing sleeping in public makes it harder to get housed and should have no place in our community," said Ashe Huang, Fellow for the American Civil Liberties Union Southern California.

Huang and other speakers emphasized a need for the city to invest in tenant rights, tenant education, and affordable housing.

The next meeting will be November 20 at 3:30 p.m.
