The National Weather Service issued a beach hazards statement at 3:42 a.m. EDT on Sunday valid from 4 p.m. EDT until Monday 11 a.m. EDT for Mason, Oceana, Muskegon, Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren counties.

"High wave action, strong currents, and dangerous swimming conditions expected. Piers may be heavily swamped by waves," can be expected according to the weather service. "North sides of piers will be vulnerable to dangerous currents and overtopping."

"Strong currents can pull swimmers into deeper water and high waves can sweep people off piers," adds the weather service. "Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions and do not venture out on piers. Please check with your local authorities on potential beach closures."
