NFL Today, Week 5

Monday night, Oct. 9
Baltimore (4-0) at Denver (2-1). The Ravens are 4-0 for the first time, while the Broncos didn’t allow a TD in their first 11 quarters, tying the 1942 Chicago Cardinals for longest span of denying a TD to begin season in NFL history.

— Donovan McNabb, Eagles, led an emotion-packed Eagles victory over the Cowboys with two TD passes and 354 yards in a 38-24 decision. He was 18-for-33.
— Rookie Bruce Gradkowski, Bucs, in his first NFL start, completed 20 of 31 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-21 loss at New Orleans.
— Eli Manning, Giants, went 23-of-33 for 256 yards and a TD in a 19-3 win over Washington.
— Marc Bulger, Rams, was 18-of-28 for 220 yards and two TDs and extended his extended his league-best interception-free streak to 214 attempts in a 23-20 win at Green Bay.
— Alex Smith, 49ers, went 15-of-19 with three TD passes in a 34-20 victory over Oakland.
Damon Huard, Chiefs, threw for 288 yards and two TDs, going 26-of-38 in a 23-20 win at Arizona. In the same game, Cardinals rookie Matt Leinart was 22-of-35 for 253 yards and two TDs. His first TD, a 49-yard strike to Anquan Boldin on the Cardinals’ first possession, came on a play the former USC star audibled into at the line.

— Tennessee rushed for 100 yards in the first quarter, and Travis Henry, who was inactive last week, finished with 19 carries for 123 yards in a 14-13 loss at Indianapolis.
— Third-string RB Noah Herron had 106 yards on 20 carries for the Packers in a 23-20 loss to St. Louis.
— Chester Taylor, Vikings, rushed for 123 yards on 26 carries in a 26-17 win against Detroit.
— Deuce McAllister, Saints, had 117 yards rushing in the first half and finished with 123, including a 24-yard TD and a 57-yard scamper in a 24-21 victory over Tampa Bay. Carnell “Cadillac” Williams, last season’s NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year for the Bucs, had 111 yards rushing on 20 carries.
— DeShaun Foster, Panthers, rushed for 106 yards and had three receptions in a 20-12 win over Cleveland.
— Frank Gore, 49ers, rushed for a career-high 134 yards and picked up 38 yards on three catches in a 34-20 win against Oakland.
— Tiki Barber, Giants, rushed for 123 yards in New York’s 19-3 win over the Redskins.

— Kansas City’s Larry Johnson, known best as a runner — he had 36 yards rushing — made six receptions for 106 yards and one TD in a 23-20 win at Arizona. His 78-yard jaunt set up the winning field goal
— Hank Baskett, Eagles, made only three receptions, but they were for 112 yards, including an 87-yard TD, in a 38-24 victory over Dallas.
— Joey Galloway, Buccaneers, gained 110 yards on four catches with one TD in a 24-21 defeat at New Orleans.
— Rookie Greg Jennings, Packers, picked up 105 yards on five catches with one score in a 23-20 loss to St. Louis.
— Bernard Berrian, Bears, made four catches for 97 yards and scored one touchdown as Chicago routed Buffalo 40-7.
Special Teams
— Robbie Gould, Bears, made four field goals, improving to 17-for-17 for the season, in a 40-7 romp over Buffalo.
— Reggie Bush, the No. 2 overall draft pick and Heisman Trophy winner, got his first NFL touchdown, a game-winning 65-yard punt return in a 24-21 Saints win over Tampa Bay. He also made 11 catches for 63 yards.
— The Cleveland Browns managed only four field goals by Phil Dawson, from 41, 47, 22 and 32, in a 20-12 loss at Carolina. Joshua Cribbs returned a kickoff 64 yards and a punt 34 yards in the second half, both leading to field goals.

— Julius Peppers, Panthers, had a sack, forced a fumble, made five tackles and hit quarterback Charlie Frye five other times in a dominant performance as Carolina beat Cleveland 20-12. Richard Marshall returned an interception for a touchdown for the Panthers.
— Lito Sheppard, Eagles, had two interceptions, returning the second 102 yards for the clinching score in a 38-24 victory over Dallas. He also made eight tackles.
— Walt Harris made three of San Francisco’s four interceptions in a 34-20 win over Oakland.
— Ben Leber, Vikings, returned Jon Kitna’s fumble 1 yard for a touchdown, then E.J. Henderson raced 45 yards with an interception to seal a 26-17 win over Detroit. The Vikings’ defense sacked Kitna five times.
— Asante Samuel, Patriots, intercepted two passes by Joey Harrington that led to two touchdowns, and New England beat Miami 20-10.
— Rookie lineman Melvin Oliver, 49ers, went 12 yards with a lateral that Oakland RB LaMont Jordan allowed to lie on the ground, clinching San Francisco’s 34-20 victory against the Raiders.

Marvin Harrison’s first catch Sunday against the Tennessee Titans gave him a reception in his 159th consecutive game, an NFL record to start a career. Harrison broke the previous mark of 158 established by former Colts and St. Louis Rams running back Marshall Faulk. He did it on a 3-yard reception in the third quarter. ... Randy Moss’ 22-yard TD catch between two defenders 51 seconds before halftime was the Oakland receiver’s 100th touchdown reception. He’s the seventh receiver in NFL history with 100 TD catches. ... Steve Smith, Panthers, went over 4,000 yards receiving for his career.

A 10-game losing streak for the Raiders is their worst skid in Al Davis’ tenure with the club since 1963 ... Chicago is off to its first 5-0 start since 1986. ... Indianapolis won its 12th straight over an AFC South foe and completed a sweep of its home games against divisional rivals with a 14-13 victory against Tennessee. The Titans (0-5) have lost seven straight in the series. ... Marc Bulger extended his league-best interception-free streak to 214 attempts. ... The Lions (0-5) have lost nine straight to Minnesota, dating to 2001.

SIZZLING STARTS
Jacksonville scored touchdowns on four of its first five possessions in a 41-0 rout of the New York Jets. Maurice Drew ran for two touchdowns, Fred Taylor added another and Byron Leftwich capped the fast start with a 1-yard TD pass to George Wrighster. ... Cardinals rookie QB Matt Leinart, the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner and 10th pick in last April’s draft, completed his first six passes in his starting debut, two for touchdowns. But Arizona fell to Kansas City 23-20.

Chicago has won its first three home games by a combined 111-20. The Bears went over 30 points for the third time this season and had their highest point total since a 47-17 victory over Tampa Bay in 1993 ... The Titans rushed for 214 yards, not enough to beat Indianapolis, though. ... — The Giants’ 19-3 win over the Redskins was only New York’s fourth victory in 18 post-bye games. It also snapped a five-game skid in the week after the bye. ... Carolina beat Cleveland despite going 0-for-10 on third-downs.

Tough defense was the Bears’ trademark during Dick Jauron’s tenure, but a shaky offense kept Chicago out of the playoffs every season but 2001.
