Belgian tavern has a genius rule to stop punters stealing glasses - by making them give up an essential item as an insurance policy

A pub in Belgium has made it almost impossible for customers to steal their glasses by making them hand over one of their shoes as an insurance policy.

Boozers across the UK face punters pocketing their glasses on a regular basis, leading to them constantly having to order more.

But Dulle Griet, located in Ghent, has attempted to tackle thieves looking for a free souvenir by tacking by taking something they can't leave without - their footwear.

Somi Lynda, from Amsterdam, went to the tavern during her trip and filmed her bizarre experience.

She took off one of her Adidas trainers and gave it to a bartender when ordering her beverage.

He then took it away and tied it up with a bunch of odd shoes belonging to other customers in the pub.

Dulle Griet also hangs the shoes up on the ceiling to prevent drinkers from snatching their footwear back when nobody is looking.

Belgium is famous for its ale, so Somi ordered their 1.2 litre beer which came in an unusual glass reminiscent of a sand timer.

The tall cup had a large rim around the top and bottom and a thin stem, meaning it had its own wooden holder so it didn't topple over.

The pub is said to charge customers a whopping £74.99 (90 Euros) on the spot if you break the glass.

Somi - a travel content creator - hilariously showed her followers the various funky socks that boozers were sporting.

The bar has a traditional, yet wacky, interior that has wooden tables and chairs, various animal heads hung up on the wall and colourful advertisements for various beers pinned up.

She said: 'This pub in Belgium takes one of your shoes as an insurance [policy] when you order beer, so you can't walk away with their glass.

'You get it back when finish the 1.2 litre [glass] of beer. It's also ok if you don't finish it.

'This was such a funny experience in Ghent. Would you be willing to give up a shoe as insurance?'

'Also, if you break the glass you have to €90 on the spot.'

The clip went viral on Instagram and whopped up a whopping 26.5million views, along with 451,000 likes and many comments.

One user wrote: 'It's tradition with the brand Kwak, those glasses are hella expensive. Really any bar that serves Kwak does this.'

Another penned: 'I'd wear a cheap ass pair of slippers and hippidy hop home with my lovely glass thanks.'

A third said: 'Cold feet, other people's stinky fungus shoes... no thanks.'

A fourth commented: 'Lol actually really smart. I wonder how many people have forgotten their shoe.'

Dulle Griet has been rated 4.4 stars out of more than 6,000 reviews on Google, with many of them mentioning the entertaining shoe policy.
