Bellevue driver among three killed in crash on I-29 in Missouri
A 29-year-old Bellevue driver headed in the wrong way is among three people who died Sunday in a collision on Interstate 29 in Missouri.
The Missouri Highway Patrol said in a statement on its website that three other people were injured in the crash that occurred about 7:20 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-29. The crash scene was six miles north of the village of Watson, Missouri, near the Iowa state line.
The names of the deceased and injured are being withheld pending notification of family.
Investigators said that the Bellevue driver of a 2023 Kia Sorento was southbound in the northbound lanes. The SUV collided with a northbound 2013 Ford Focus driven by an 18-year-old with two 18-year-old women as passengers, all from Kearney, Missouri.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene as was one of the passengers in the Ford, who was thrown from the vehicle. The second passenger was flown by helicopter to the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
A 1-year-old child from Bellevue in the SUV was taken to a hospital in Hamburg, Iowa, with moderate injuries, the statement said.
A northbound 2024 semitrailer truck swerved to avoid the initial crash and hit a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by a 32-year-old man from Sidney, Iowa, who was also southbound in the northbound lane, according to the statement. The driver of the Tahoe was taken to the hospital in Hamburg for treatment.
